Abstract:
Regarding to the fact that Iran is located in earthquake prone region and in order to create an integrated scheme throughout the country, the “Code of Practice for Seismic Resistant Design of Buildings”, known as "2800 standard", has been provided as the basis of structural design for engineers. Due to the Ambiguity is dynamic pattern in semantics which are not studied thoroughly in Iranian Engineering Codes in the past; so the importance and the objective of this study was the Semantics analysis of this phenomenon in the context of Ambiguity. It is necessary to use coherent and explicit words to express technical terms in the Codes. The current study explores different types of ambiguities in the text of "4th Edition of Iranian code of practice for seismic resistant design of buildings", within the framework of Empson’s theoretical framework, named "Seven Types of Ambiguity". In this regards, different types of ambiguity are identified and suggestions are made to resolve them. Finally the text of the "2800 standard" would be designed by Linguistics principle.
