Abstract:
This thesis aimed at exploring and comparing stylistic features in political speeches orated by Hassan Rouhani and Barak Obama at UN assembly in 2014. In this research, semantic and syntactic stylistic devices were linguistically studied using Crystal and Davy's(1985) Linguistic-Stylistic Approach . Semantic stylistic devices were allusion, hyperbole, and metonymy. Juxtaposition, repetition, and rhetorical questions were the syntactic stylistic devices. To study extra linguistic factors and investigate feelings and effectual positionings (authorial and non-authorial affect), Martin and White's Appraisal theory (2005) was employed. Findings showed that U.S president applied more number of metonymy, allusion, rhetorical question, and repetition of same structure in his words and sentences. Also the comparison demonstrated that in both speeches, expressed emotions through adjectives and nouns were more obvious and both presidents preferred to indicate their emotional positioning to different issues, people, and events more through 2nd and 3rd persons (non-authorial affect)than 1st person (authorial affect).
