Abstract:
The present empirical research studies code-switching from the sociolinguistic standpoint and investigates the impact of personality, gender and age on Gilaki-Farsi code-switching among Rasht inhabitants. The sample consisted of 40 Gilaki-Farsi bilinguals who were living in Rasht for more than 10 years. They were investigated in two age groups of 20-40 and 40-70 and two gender groups, men and women. To study the impact of personality on code-switching, the participants were categorized into four groups of personality based on their answers to Eysenck (1975) personality test: stable extrovert, unstable extrovert, stable introvert and unstable introvert. The level of code-switching among each personality, gender and age group was investigated using the mixed (quantitative/qualitative) methods design. The quantitative method included the inferential analysis which was performed by SPSS and statistical tests and the qualitative method included descriptive analysis. The results showed that personality correlated with code-switching and was used more in unstable introvert, unstable extrovert, stable extrovert and stable introvert, respectively. Furthermore, according to the quantitative results, there was no significant relationship (0.440) between code-switching and gender, but code-switching is negatively correlated (0.001) with age. In other words, the older the people got, they had less tendency to use code-switching when they talked.
