Abstract |
Compounding is a productive morphological phenomenon in Persian. In this process two or more free morphemes mix together to form a new free morpheme. Some of the derived words made of compounding do not have transparent meanings and some others can only be understood through the context (physical context or co-text). Many different linguists by theories in various approaches have studied these compounds. Functional Discourse Grammar as a functionalist approach to language can explain this process properly. Here in this article we show that in this theoretical framework with up-down analysis and starting from the context and looking at context in all levels, can describe and explain all the issues related to these compound words. The data used in this article is some compound words taken from Persian monolingual dictionaries. The method of gathering data is through studying texts and the methodology is descriptive- analytical. The theoretical framework is Functional Discourse Grammar . |
