Abstract |
In cognitive semantics framework, a motion schema is a cognitive concept and category. It is supposed to be strongly embodied (Talmy, 1985) and leads to the perception and conceptualization of the world phenomena (Lakoff & Johson, 1980) through creating a concreate basis for metaphorical mappings (Langacker, 1987; Johnson. 1987; Lakoff & Johnson, 1999). From a cognitive perspective, this schema exists in all motion verbs and includes a fixed pattern of source-path-target in the outside world. In this paper, the function of the image schema in the conception of metaphorical structures, involving some simple motion verbs in Farsi, is examined. The findings show that when these verbs are used in a metaphorical sense, type and manner of their image schema (specially their motion schema as a focus of this study) change completely so that we cannot find the pervious stable pattern within them to perceive their meaning(s). Contrary to the belief of cognitive linguists, therefore, the perception of such verbs` literal meaning(s) in Farsi does not result in the conceptualization of the abstract structures involving them. Thus, the conceptual representation of such structures and the conception of their meaning(s) are stated not to be influenced by the function of the image schema existing in the motion verbs. As a result, they seem to be processed independently in speaker`s mind. |
