Abstract
Lexicography and cognitive linguistics are seemingly two distinct areas in linguistics. However, as the goal of lexicography is to provide a systematic description of the language, linguistics can have a significant influence on the former (Bejoint, 2010). Cognitive linguistics, focusing on the meaning, tries to describe and explain the ways in which the world is perceived and conceptualized by the speakers of a language; therefore, the description of linguistic elements in dictionaries appears to be more feasible on the basis of this realistic approach (Geeraerts, 2007). In this research, the application of the cognitive semantic approach in defining emotion terms in monolingual dictionaries has been assessed. For this group of abstract words, a novel descriptive model is proposed by Ostermann (2012), which is based on the traditional principles of lexicography, and it also applies cognitive semantic achievements and data. Using this view, in this study, the cognitive definitions of nine emotion terms have been compared and evaluated with the definitions given in Sokhan dictionary (2002). In the study, two group of random Persian native speakers were asked to choose a correct equivalent term for the provided cognitive definitions and Sokhan definitions. The results show that subjects were more accurate in identifying the correct equivalent term regarding the cognitive descriptive model. Therefore, it can be concluded that such cognitive definitions are more compatible with the native speakers' real understanding of the emotions.
