Abstract
This paper investigates the word-formation process of compounding, derivation, and derivation-compounding in the scientific variety of Persian and English based on the corpus of data in “Physical Exercise Dictionary” published by Language Academy, and “Political Dictionary” authored by Dariush Ashuri. It also studied different affixes used in forming scientific words in the two languages and their relative frequencies. The results are then compared with those of Sahraei and Rafi’i (1392) with discussion of relevant issues. This paper mostly agrees with the results of the aforementioned study. However, there are some differences in the choice of affixes in the corpora the two studies have used based on each of their special scientific field. It is also argued that even though dictionaries written randomly by different non-organized authors have a significant role in word-formation and enrichment of word supply in the language, those authored by Academy enjoy more cohesion and better organization.
