Abstract:
Conceptual metaphor is considered as a means of understanding and explaining language use.So the present research based on Lakoff and Johnson's theory in " conceptual metaphor", studies the ontological metaphor of life in an Iranian short novel which is called " the Blind Owl" (Boof- e- Koor) written by Sadegh Hedayat in 1930s.
This paper is trying to give a brief description on cognitive linguistics and cognitive semantics and analyse the "life"conceptual metaphor in "the Blind Owl" book.
This paper is done on semantic mappings that has the form of " Target Domain is/ as Source Domain".It is based on a descriptive – analytic approach and attempts to categorize the frequency of various source domains that have been used for life as a target domain and discovers their importance to inspire the writer's thought.
It is concluded that life is rendered in different concepts and "life as a thing" has the highest frequency among other concepts. These findings can be seen in the chart. It also shows the writer's overview towards the life.
