Abstract:
The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between using linguistic devices, including deictic and nondeictic expressions, and the representation of cognitive processes for encoding spatio-temporal references in Persian-speaking children’s narratives, according to their age impact. To this end, three groups of Persian-speaking children, comprising 7, 9 and 11 years old as well as a control group of adults (each group consisting of 10 subjects) participated in this study. Narrative data were elicited using the picture story “Frog, where are you?” (Mayer, 1969). The produced narratives were recorded, described and analysed based on Tenbrink’s (2011, 2015) model. The results indicated that all the subjects used deictic and nondeictic expressions for encoding spatial and temporal references; however, the representation of spatial references were more dominant than temporal references in their narratives. In addition, the frequency of using spatial deictic expressions was more in 7 years old children’s narratives compared with other groups, but applying this device reduced by an increase in the subjects’ age. Furthermore, the findings showed that the subjects’ linguistic and cognitive abilities development, such as the perception of using the different linguistic devices under study in different situations with respect to the addressee’s mental state was effective on the way of spatio-temporal references representations.
